Sheffield Elementary School

Welcome to the brand new Internet home of Sheffield Elementary School! We are located in the town of Montague, Massachusetts, one of many in New England that takes pride in its rich colonial and industrial history. With diverse landscapes featuring historical mills, rich farmland, and the residential villages of Montague, we feel lucky to be part of the Gill-Montague School District.

Our school serves a student body of elementary students in grades 2 – 5. We are a Title I school, and our enthusiastic teachers and administrators are dedicated to providing the very best educational experiences for our young students.

We’ve designed our new website to be a convenient resource for the involved parents, students, teachers, and community members of Sheffield Elementary School. We invite you to explore the pages of our online home to learn more about our school, as well as the exciting news and upcoming events that keep our students busy and striving for excellence.

A Message from Our Principal

Dear Sheffield Families,

Welcome fall! October is that fickle month when the weather cannot make up its mind if it is going to be warm or cool. Please send your child in layers, and do not forget to write your child’s name on the label of sweatshirts and sweaters.

October is fire safety month. Our friends at the Turners Falls Fire Department will be coming on Tuesday, October 10 for their annual safety presentation. This will take the form of an assembly that will be approximately thirty minutes in length. Ask your child what they learned or what stood out at this presentation.

The staff will be looking at fall data after the Columbus Day long weekend. All students in grades two through five have taken part in DIBEL’s benchmark testing. We will review scores and analyze as a team to determine how we will group students for small group instruction as well as the focus. If your child would benefit from small group instruction from one of our reading teachers in addition to the classroom teacher, you will be receiving a letter from the reading teacher informing you of this option, and we will request your permission. There are five data meetings a year to review student progress. If your child no longer requires the additional support after one of the remaining four meetings, we will notify you, in writing, of that as well.

Mark your calendars for Friday, October 20 for our second annual Sheffield Pumpkin Carving Party. We have approximately 200 pumpkins that will be gutted and ready for your family’s creative carving masterpiece. We will tag and number all pumpkins and bring them to The Great Falls Festival (formerly Pumpkinfest) on Saturday, October 21. We will return pumpkins to Sheffield, so students can collect their carved pumpkins to take home. More information will be coming home about this amazing Friends of Sheffield sponsored event!

With Sheffield Pride,

Melissa Pitrat
